The AFC South has long been one of the NFL’s most unpredictable divisions. Some years it produces a legitimate contender, and other times it feels like a dogfight just to see which team can get above .500. Heading into the 2025 season, the picture is once again wide open, but one team has a slight edge over the rest. Here’s a breakdown of how the AFC South stacks up this year and what fans can expect from each squad.
Houston Texans: 9–8
The Houston Texans are my pick to come out on top in 2025, finishing with a 9–8 record. They may not be dominating the conference, but in a division where everyone else is still finding their footing, that’s enough to win.
C.J. Stroud continues to show why the Texans believe he’s their franchise quarterback. He’s been calm under pressure, accurate with his throws, and quick to learn from mistakes. His leadership has elevated the Texans’ offense, which still isn’t one of the league’s most explosive units but is efficient enough to win close games.
Defensively, DeMeco Ryans has instilled a culture of toughness and resilience. Houston’s young defenders are starting to play with confidence, creating turnovers and keeping the team in games. It won’t always be pretty, but the Texans have the right formula to grind out wins. For now, they’re the frontrunners in the AFC South.
Jacksonville Jaguars: 7–10
The Jaguars are one of the most frustrating teams in football. On paper, they have talent across the board. Trevor Lawrence has all the tools to be an elite quarterback, and when he’s on his game, he looks like a future star. But the problem is consistency. Jacksonville has a knack for winning big games one week and then turning around and losing to teams they should beat the next.
Lawrence needs to find that week-to-week steadiness if the Jaguars want to take the next step. Their defense is athletic but struggles against high-powered offenses, and too often, they collapse late in games. At 7–10, Jacksonville is competitive but not yet mature enough to seriously challenge for the top spot.
Indianapolis Colts: 7–10
Right alongside Jacksonville are the Indianapolis Colts, also finishing at 7–10 in my predictions. Like the Jaguars, the Colts are caught between being good enough to compete but not quite strong enough to break through.
Jonathan Taylor is still the heart and soul of this offense. When he’s healthy, he can take over games on the ground. The offensive line is better than it was a few years ago, but questions remain at quarterback. Until Indianapolis finds a reliable passing game to balance things out, they’ll struggle to keep up with teams that can score quickly.
Their defense is gritty and will keep them in plenty of games, but just like Jacksonville, Indy has too many gaps to climb into playoff contention this year.
Tennessee Titans: 2–15
Then there’s the Tennessee Titans, who are firmly in rebuilding mode. At 2–15, this season will be more about development than wins. Rookie quarterback Cam Ward has the talent to eventually be the future of the franchise, but throwing him into the fire with limited protection and weapons around him is going to lead to some rough outings.
The offensive line struggles in pass protection, and the run game no longer has the same punch it did during Derrick Henry’s prime. The defense plays hard but spends too much time on the field, and fatigue catches up quickly. Titans fans will need patience—this is about building for the future, not competing in 2025.
Final Outlook
The AFC South is not the flashiest division this year, but it has plenty of intriguing storylines. The Texans are good enough to take the crown at 9–8, though they’re still a step away from being a true contender in the AFC. The Jaguars and Colts remain stuck in the middle, both with potential but lacking the consistency or quarterback stability to push further. And the Titans, well, they’re starting over, banking on Cam Ward to develop into a leader for the future.
Projected Standings:
Houston Texans: 9–8
Jacksonville Jaguars: 7–10
Indianapolis Colts: 7–10
Tennessee Titans: 2–15
The 2025 AFC South may not deliver fireworks every week, but fans can expect tight battles, close finishes, and plenty of growth from the young quarterbacks in the division. Houston holds the edge this year, but long term, this division is full of possibilities.
